Dear all
This is again that time of the year when we join together to celebrate our unity against cancer and to inspire and infuse new life and vigour into the campaign aimed at educating people and spread awareness about this menace so that people can fight it fearlessly.
The event – Walkathon 2014 – is scheduled to be held on 26th October 2014 and here is a brief history of the event and its organizers along with a letter from our President and Secretary
Origin: Can Fight Cancer (CFC), an NGO formed with the objective of raising awareness against cancer was formally formed in the year 2013. The core group consists of 8 individuals drawn from medical professionals, cancer patients, survivors and their families.
Goals: As an organization we are dedicated towards creating awareness against the disease and insist that cancer is a curable disease. We lay stress on the importance of early detection and preventing fall out of patients from treatment.
Increasing awareness about cancer and how it can be prevented: Prevention is the most cost effective and a long term approach that can be used for cancer control. Our goals are to eliminate exposure to cancer causing factors like lack of physical activity, use of tobacco, improper nutrition and occupational exposures.
Early detection: There are many cancers where early detection is said to reduce mortality rates for it directly translates to earlier diagnosis and treatment. Early detection comprises of two main components – education to promote early diagnosis and screening. We believe that cancer is just a word.
Forming an interactive Support Group for cancer patients and their families
A society that exists to propagate cancer awareness, work toward early detection, disseminate information about prevention and support patients affected with cancer.
Projects: A list of events (held and to be held) is provided below in order to help you understand the kind of activities that we are involved in.
1. Website: www.canfightcancer.com
This website and its corresponding CanFightCancer Facebook Page are regularly maintained and cover information about the disease, treatment and care. Adding motivating stories and how certain issues can be best tackled is a priority with us at the site. The events mentioned below can also be viewed on our website.
2. Walkathon (26th October, 2013): A brief glimpse of the event can be enjoyed:

3. Cancer awareness during Limb Donation Camp (26th January, 2014)
4. Support Group (Initiated on 4th February, 2014): One of the dream that binds us as a group is rehabilitation of patients into the mainstream society. A small step that we have taken towards the same is by forming a SUPPORT GROUP that meets every second Friday of the month at the premises of Freemasons Club in the city. The support group looks at the health as a holistic concept and not just as something physical.
5. Women’s Health Check Up Camp (8th March, 2014): We were successful in organizing a health checkup camp for underprivileged women. Most of the women screened in this camp were serving as household maids or factory workers. In addition to general check up, 60 PAP smear tests were conducted and fortunately all were reported to be normal.
6. Teens against Tobacco (May, 2014 onwards): Catch them when they are young – with this motto in mind, we are collaborating with various schools for a Poster Making Competition around the theme ‘Teens against Tobacco’. We have been lucky so far to be get participation from
1. Kundan Vidya Mandir School (Ludhiana),
2. Broadway Public School (Manal, Barnala)
3. Sant Isher Singh Ji Memorial Public School (Rara Sahib, Ludhiana),
4. Sat Paul Mittal School (Ludhiana).
We hope to involve other schools in the district as well and are targeting at least one school per month. The winning posters are available on our facebook page for review.
Projects planned for future:
1) Walkathon, 2014
We thank you for the interest that you have shown in our effort and look forward to encouragement, motivation and guidance to serve the society in a better manner.
2) Souvenir, 2014
In order to encourage and motivate the young artists who joined hands to promote the message of adopting anti tobacco behavior, CFC has planned to compile all winning posters received from different schools in a souvenir. The idea is to provide an opportunity to the general public into these young minds and look at the incredible work that they have put together. The souvenir has been developed as a tool to promote the messages of ‘Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle’ and ‘Early Detection of Cancer’. We hope to meet the costs incurred in conducting the walkathon, printing of souvenir and conducting various awareness activities in schools by your advertisements in the souvenir.
